Airline passengers are taking check-in and boarding into their own hands, Lucy Siebert reports.
Whether you love them or hate them, most airline passengers are addicted to their mobile phones and airlines have been quick to jump at the chance to leverage this technology addiction into a potential cost-saving. While there have been many advances in self-service check-in technology in the past five years, 2008 has seen mobile check-in really arriving on the scene with airlines such as Lufthansa, bmi and Northwest unveiling various trials and roll-outs of the technology during the summer. Montreal's Self-Service Generation
While Canadian airports allow self-tagging for domestic flights only, and the US is still looking into implanting self-tagging services, Aéroports de Montréal has pushed ahead, installing more than 70 self-service kiosks, which also facilitate self-tagging. Future Travel Experience on Bagdrop
Best Baggage Initiative - Amsterdam Airport Schiphol & KLM
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and KLM were jointly awarded the Best Baggage Initiative for their permanent implementation of self-service bag drop facilities. Following a successful trial period alongside BagDrop Systems, six of the latest generation BagDrop units entered operation in August, and plans are in place to implement 12 further units for KLM and SkyTeam partners in February 2012. The BagDrop units are already allowing passengers to check their bags in themselves within just 30 seconds. The award was presented to Marit Gangsaas, Advisor Terminal Logistics, Schiphol, and Victor Vaessen, Manager Product Development, KLM, by Carlos Garcia, VP Travel Services & Guest Logistics, Carnival Cruise Linee.
